A new study shows Americans are increasingly preferring to purchase their life insurance directly from the company either on the Internet, through the mail or over the phone. Two-thirds of Americans still prefer to buy life insurance from an insurance or financial professional, but a growing number like the idea of buying it directly.

Guardian and Berkshire have released a new ProVider Plus series for their disability insurance portfolio, effective Jan. 3.
Among the individual disability insurance policy highlights are a pure own-occupation definition of total disability for all occupations, medical specialty protection for physicians and dentists, a recovery benefit for up to the entire benefit period through residual disability benefit rider, a graded lifetime indemnity benefit rider, no mental and nervous limitations and a four-year delayed COLA.
The product is approved in Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C., with additional approvals in Maryland and Pennsylvania expected later this quarter, according to Steve Crawford, principal of Guardian Disability Insurance Brokerage.

HomeServe, a home emergency insurance cover and domestic repair provider, has appointed Ben Mingay to the board as a non-executive director, effective 1 January 2012.
In addition, Mingay will also join the audit committee at the company.
Mingay is a managing partner of Smith Square Partners, an independent corporate finance advisory firm.
Mingay has over 20 years experience as a corporate finance adviser and prior to co-founding Smith Square Partners he was a managing director of Hawkpoint Partners and Credit Suisse First Boston (Europe).
Mingay is also a non-executive director of AIM listed Alternative Networks.
